At Leidos, we deliver innovative solutions through the efforts of our diverse and talented people who are dedicated to our customers’ success.  We empower our teams, contribute to our communities, and operate sustainably. Everything we do is built on a commitment to do the right thing for our customers, our people, and our community. Leidos is well known for our people-oriented culture, positive work environment, technical excellence, and resilient business ethics.

Within the Defense Sector, the Airborne Systems Business Area at Leidos currently has an opening for a talented Senior Aviation Embedded Engineer to work in our Huntsville office. This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience to help develop software for tactical strike, sensors, CUAS, and UAS solutions.

This position focuses on the development of robust, innovative software frameworks, as well as the fielding, support, and maintenance of software products. Software products range from analysis tools/simulations, mission planning software, and components of mission-critical systems.

Primary Responsibilities.

  • Conceptual design across the full stack of software for airborne systems, embedded software architectural design, code implementation, team peer review, unit testing, cohesive integration of loosely coupled software modules within subsystems and across distributed networks, use of DevOps and CI/CD pipelines, and development of software tools, harnesses, and infrastructures to support a fully integrated solution.
  • Leading and contributing to the design, development, testing, troubleshooting, and debugging of software enhancements as well as new software-intensive systems and products.
  • Frequent and direct communication with customers, end users, internal stakeholders, and team members.
  • Applying established software engineering principles, standards, and best practices throughout the full software development life cycle (SDLC) including, but not limited to: (a) software requirements analysis, (b) hardware compatibility analysis, and (c) development of tools and software products that support infrastructure, platform design and system maintenance.
  • Recommending and implementing new technologies, tools and standards to enhance software engineering practices, which align to organizational goals.
  • Leading and mentoring other team members, contributing to the delivery of complex projects, all the while aligning with technical strategy and execution plans.

Basic Qualifications.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent technical degree with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Must have 10-15 years of relevant technical experience.
  • Must have demonstrated expertise in software development across the full lifecycle, including architecture, implementation, testing, and deployment.
  • Must have proven experience leading technical teams and driving high-impact projects to successful completion.
  • Must have proficiency in one or more programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Java, or C#.
  • Must have strong experience in C++ software development.
  • Must have strong knowledge of modern software development practices including Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, and test automation.
  • Must have expertise in software architecture, system design, and integration of complex systems.
  • Must have hands-on experience with debugging, performance tuning, and system troubleshooting.
  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to address highly complex technical challenges.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage with executive stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
  • Must have experience with version control systems (e.g., Git), build tools, and modern development environments.
  • Must be a resident of North Alabama or willing to relocate to the Huntsville-North Alabama area.

Security Clearance Qualifications.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications.

  • Experience developing large-scale, distributed, or embedded systems
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Background in developing tools and platforms that support infrastructure and systems engineering
  • Prior experience working in highly regulated or mission-critical environments (e.g., aerospace or defense sectors)

At Leidos, we don’t want someone who "fits the mold"—we want someone who melts it down and builds something better. This is a role for the restless, the over-caffeinated, the ones who ask, “what’s next?” before the dust settles on “what’s now.”

If you’re already scheming step 20 while everyone else is still debating step 2… good. You’ll fit right in.
